At least 11 people were killed and numerous others were hurt when a bus carrying revellers hit a matatu and then rammed into a trailer at the notorious Subuiga blackspot on the Meru-Nanyuki road.
According to authorities, the disaster occurred on Saturday night and claimed the lives of some of the people who were on their way to the area to see Nigerian musician Ruger perform.
According to witnesses and eyewitnesses, the bus was dragging itself many meters away as it was being overtaken by another vehicle at a mountainous portion of the road when it hit head-on with an approaching matatu.
According to the police, the bus hit a trailer before stopping while it was traveling into Meru town.
Rono Bunei, the head of the Eastern Police, stated that an investigation is being conducted into the occurrence.
“The accident scene is a dark place. We have lost a lot of lives, which is regrettable,” he remarked. This accident is the most recent one to occur in the nation.
On Saturday night at about 8 PM, the accident took place.
By the time the reporters arrived, Kenya Red Cross personnel and firefighters from Meru County Government were already on the scene.
According to the National Transport and Safety Authority’s most recent figures, 3,541 people have died in road accidents this year as of September 26 compared to 3,286 during the same time in 2021.
According to the data, pedestrians continue to suffer the greatest number of fatalities (1,269), followed by motorcyclists (941).
The number of pedestrians represents an increase of 10.9% from 1,144 last year, while the number of motorcycle fatalities increased by 3.8%, or 941, from 912 to the review period.
According to the numbers, passengers experienced the biggest increase in deaths, rising by 20.3% from 527 in 2021 to 634 this year.
The number of fatalities involving pedal bicycles dropped from 63 to 49, a 22.2 percent decline, while the number of drivers killed in traffic incidents rose from 314 to 324, a 3.18 percent increase.
Police claim that speeding is what caused the majority of the collisions.
The rise in crashes has also been linked to reckless driving, risky overtaking, intoxicated driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, and failure to wear a helmet, among other problems.
