South African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns recorded the highest victory in the second round of the 2022/23 CAF Champions League matches played over the weekend.
Sundowns already holds the record for the biggest victory in the history of the CAF Champions League – an 11-1 win over Cote d’Or, also a team from Seychelles.
The Brazilians were playing as visitors as their opponents La Passe FC of Seychelles Island adopted their home venue, Loftus stadium in Pretoria as their temporary home venue since all the venues in their country do not meet the CAF standard to host international matches.
The South African side was always expected to beat the part-timers from Seychelles and the tone was set when 29-year-old Grant Kekana headed in a first-minute goal.
The Brazilians never had to work up a sweat as the goals continued to flow before half-time – Sirino registered in the 13th minute, there was an own goal in the 19th minute, Aubrey Modiba slammed home a 40th-minute effort before Sirino got his second in the 44th minute.
The Pretoria side took their foot off the pedal a bit in the second half for what amounted to little more than a practice game. Sipho Mbule (58th minute) and Sphelele Mkhulise (87′) were on target in the second half.
Marcelo Allende and Gaston Sirino, the two South Americans, have quickly developed chemistry and this was on display at Loftus on Sunday as the Chilean (Allende) and the Uruguayan combined superbly. Between them, they grabbed three goals and two assists.
Mamelodi Sundowns will sit at the same venue, Loftus stadium, to welcome Le Passe FC, but Coach Mokwena’s side seems to be already in the group stages of the competition as there is no way La Passe FC can come back to eliminate the Brazilians.
The head coach Mokwena has earlier in an interview revealed that it is the CAF Champions League title for the Brazilians or nothing else.
