Egypt Football Association has rejected an appeal from Egyptian premier league runners-up, Pyramid FC’s request to play in the 2022/2023 CAF Champions League competition instead of Al Ahly who finished 3rd in the just-ended Egypt Premier League.
Pyramid FC place 2nd with 71 points in the just-ended Egypt Premier league and thus qualified to play in this year’s CAF Champions League according to rules and regulations guiding the competition instead of Al Ahly which placed 3rd with 70 points.
Two teams from Egypt’s Premier league represent the country in the Champions League and by Pyramid placing 2nd position, they were eligible to play in the Champions League but the Egyptian Football Association says Pyramid’s request cannot be granted to replace Al Ahly in the Champions league since they have already submitted the countries representative names to the Confederation of African football.
CAF requested the member Associations to submit names of clubs qualified to represent their country in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup not later than 31st July, 2002.
Per such date, the Egyptian Premier League was still in session so the EFA decided to use last season’s representative in the competition to represent the country thus making Al Ahly eligible to play in the Champions League though they place 3rd after the league.
Zamalek won the Egyptian Premier League with 77 points making it their 14th Premier League Titles.
