The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) demands that the government should immediately put into effect all of the conditions of service for teachers working in rural parts of the country.
Charles Ateem, the Bolgatanga Municipal Chairman of GNAT, stated on the Day Break Upper East Show on the occasion of World Teachers Day that it is intolerable that teachers frequently go without the benefits they are due.
“There are numerous things we are watching out for in terms of the transformation [we are referring to]. In our condition of service, which we signed in 2020, we stipulated that the deprived teacher circumstances will be fully implemented,”
“It was stated that teachers should receive at least 20% of their basic salary if they consent to accept postings to underprivileged areas. 10% should be allocated to them as accommodation. The requirements must be followed in the letter,”
“It would be nice if the government could provide us with all of these things in addition to the necessary training. The professional allowance is still owed to us. This is designed to offer us the chance to do what we refer to as professional training,”
Mr. Ateem had earlier stated that although the teachers had received the laptops they had helped pay for in part, the government had not yet given them the support they need to fully realize the government’s vision of digitization.
On World Teachers’ Day, teachers’ contributions to education are recognized, and their value is emphasized along with their role in helping students and society advance.
The goal of Teachers’ Day is to recognize teachers, address some of the difficulties affecting their profession, and entice the brightest young minds to pursue careers in education.
To accomplish this goal, many organizations, including UNESCO, Education International (EI), UNICEF, UNDP, the International Labour Organization (ILO), etc., organize campaigns and conferences. Every year, UNESCO assigns a theme for this day and campaigns centre on that theme.
