A group of youth of Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality have instituted a football competition dubbed Wassa Hemaa Cup to honour and show appreciation to Hon. Barbara Oteng-Gyasi, the President of Wassa-Hemaa Foundation.
The tournament will serve as appreciation for her immense contributions in terms of the development of Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality and the country at large during and after her tenure as Legislator (2017-2020).
The maiden edition of the Gala competition scheduled to be played between Saturday, 8ᵗʰ to Sunday, 16ᵗʰ October 2022, would have participating teams from communities within the Municipality such as Bondaye/Nsuta, Prestea/Himan, Awodua/Gordon, Bogoso/Beppoh, Aboso/Fantemines, Insu/Obengkrom, Huni-Valley/Damang and Nsuem/ Wassa Nkran.
The Lead Organizer of the football fiesta Mr. Aaron of Aboso indicated that the unprecedented record of developmental projects initiated by Hon. Barbara Oteng-Gyasi such as the construction of a One-Storey Ultra-Modern Mother and Baby Intensive Care Unit at Prestea, funding the purchase of an Incubator for Prestea Government Hospital and provision of medical equipment for Prestea Government Hospital/ CHPS Compounds.
Others include Prestea and Himan Inner City Roads in the Synohydro Project, lobbying for the construction of two AstroTurfs in the Municipality (Prestea, Aboso), a school bus for Prestea Senior High Technical School (Prestech), Assembly Hall and a 6-unit classroom block also at Prestech, the establishment of Cocobod Agric office at Prestea Anyinam.
Her achievement also comprises of rehabilitation of Prestea Islamic basic school, playing a lead role in the revamping of Prestea Sankofa Gold Mine, construction of Bogoso Islamic basic school, lobbying for the construction of Bogoso Polyclinic, Yamoransa Model lab, construction of two KG Blocks at Koduakrom and Dumase, lobbying for the ongoing Markets at Huni-Valley and Bondai.
Also, the ongoing construction of major roads in the Municipality as well as the construction of fifteen network masks in selected rural areas, 250 capacity Boys Dormitory and Twelve Unit Classroom Block for Huni Valley Senior High, annual support of hair dryers and sewing machines to the respective associations, and securing employment for many of the youth amongst others.
Indeed, even as a former Legislator, she has worked through her Foundation, the Wassa-Hemaa Foundation, to bring development and comfort to the good people of Prestea Huni-Valley.
The donation of a Chevrolet Single Cabin Pick-up during the Farmers Day celebration, donation of electrical cables worth Fifty Thousand Ghana cedis towards the electrification of the Appiatse Resettlement site for the Appiatse displaced persons, payment for surgery for a child with a hole in heart, rehabilitation of a Classroom Block for Brigade Camp, completion of three (3) out of the five community centres across communities within the Aboso enclave, the ongoing construction of a Multipurpose Basketball Court at Huni Valley and others.
Also, her tenure as Minister of Tourism witnessed the successful implementation of the phenomenal Year of Return project which marketed Ghana to the Diaspora and positively impacted the economy of the country.
These achievements are a true reflection of her commitment to the development of Wassa land in particular and Ghana generally which deserves recognition and commendation.
Hon. Barbara Oteng-Gyasi expressed appreciation to the youth for the honour and presented Jerseys, Footballs and branded T-shirts to facilitate the successful organization of the tournament and promised to attend the final match on 16th October 2022.
